Uncle Sam and You
A good civics course will teach your child how laws are made, enforced, modified, and amended, and his rights and duties as a citizen. A great civics course goes even further. Uncle Sam and You covers the basics and delves into national symbols, international relations, national security, national holidays, and much, much more. Replete with images, Uncle Sam and You highlights both modern and historical photographs and illustrations.
Great for independent learning, there is no teacher's manual; the simple instructions in Uncle Sam and You are directed to your child.
A new unit is introduced every week with four daily lessons, each with four to six optional activities. Some activities included are creative writing, vocabulary usage, instructions to draw a picture or take a photograph, and reading assignments from The Citizen's Handbook. The Citizen's Handbook readings are a diverse collection of speeches, personal memoirs, newspaper articles and advertisements, historical writings, excerpts from the Constitution, and much more.
Another suggested activity is to read two to three chapters daily from eight optional books. This will give your child a richer perspective on the various topics studied. These titles (listed in the publisher's information below) are ones you may already have or can easily obtain from your local library. If you have a voracious reader, this activity can be a good choice.
Uncle Sam and You also includes thirty optional lessons on America's patriotic holidays that can be used once a week. A special corresponding multi-age family activity such as craft and art projects or themed meals is assigned to each holiday lesson.
The Uncle Sam and You Answer Key provides answers for the end-of-lesson assignments, student workbook (optional, sold separately), and lesson review (optional, sold separately).
